“Do not pass by a man in need, for you may be the hand of God to him.” Proverbs 3:27

St. Vincent DePaul Society

The local chapter of the St. Vincent dePaul Society is a non-profit social work agency that helps the less fortunate in Jersey County who find themselves in dire need of financial assistance. St. Vincent dePaul provides food, health care items, baby care items, medicine, and has even provided transportation.

St. Patrick’s in Grafton and St. Francis Xavier in Jerseyville have combined since October 2005 to make up this local chapter of the internationally charitable organization which derives its name from St. Vincent dePaul, a 17th century priest from France, who spent his life tirelessly aiding the poor. The means of funding this work has always been through the generous donations of the parishioners from these churches or others in the community.

We have also received monetary grants from the Springfield Diocese several times and have a monthly fundraiser at the Knights of Columbus Hall by selling food during the Queen of Hearts drawing. Jesus said, “The poor will always be with you” and “Whatever you do to the least of your brothers and sisters you do to me.” We are taking to heart Jesus’ words by caring for the less fortunate.

Since 2014, we have co-oped with Catholic Charities in aiding them to provide a big supply of food to 30 families every 3 months (120 families each year). We are truly blessed to have these ministries available in Jersey County. Thank you if you have ever donated. God will surely reward your generosity and kindness.
